The Vision for Chain Abstraction and Addressing State Fragmentation with Adrian Brink of Anoma

Our first interview with Adrian was probably in 2020 or 2021 at a conference, so it was a pleasure to catch up with him again.

This time, we are diving into a fresh take on some key themes in onchain development that are worth paying attention to. Adrian, who has been in the trenches of crypto development since 2016, gives us some deep insights into intent-based systems, how they compare to traditional transaction models, and why privacy is more essential than ever.

We have been learning about intents for some time already, but this podcast further strengthened our thesis that intents are here to stay and will likely become the de facto way people interact onchain.

In this piece, we explore how Anoma’s architecture is addressing major challenges like privacy and the inefficiencies of global consensus. What stands out is the shift from transaction execution to defining intents, giving users more control over how and when their state transitions are settled.

You’ll also learn about the value of user-centric chains, where state is only shared when necessary, and why Adrian believes that localized state and privacy-preserving actions are going to be key in the future of crypto. Nomada’s launch, in particular, brings this to life by providing asset-agnostic privacy solutions for DeFi users who are already concerned about onchain privacy.

The majority of the conversation was centered around intents, but we did discuss Namada at the end.

Hope you enjoy.
